The Ultimate Vacation: A Caribbean Spinning® Resort
By Barbara Hoots, Indoor Cycling Studio Designer and STAR 3 Instructor
When famed comedian Jerry Seinfeld once bemoaned, “There is no such thing as fun for the whole family,” I had to laugh out loud. He obviously doesn’t know about Half Moon, a luxurious fitness and family-oriented resort in the Caribbean.
Half Moon is nestled among 400 beautifully manicured acres in Rose Hall, Jamaica, and recently partnered with Mad Dogg Athletics to become the first officially licensed Spinning resort in the Caribbean. In addition to a custom-designed Spinning studio, Half Moon features a two-mile white sand beach, an award-winning spa with yoga cabanas suspended above the sea, a Robert Trent Jones, Sr.-designed 18-hole golf course, 13 lit tennis courts, 54 swimming pools, a natural dolphin lagoon, jogging and cycling trails, an English equestrian center, a fully-equipped gym with expert personal trainers, an adorable children’s village, a new teen center and water sports galore. Think that’s enough to keep your family busy?
Half Moon’s new Spinning studio is equipped with 10 new Spinner® Pro bikes, an impressive Peavey sound system, iPods® filled with custom playlists, Countryman wireless microphones, a powerful air handling system to keep you cool during the ride and a team of certified Jamaican instructors who will melt your heart with their native charm. Two classes are offered daily, and private rides can be arranged for wedding parties, business conventions, or special groups.
The Spinning program at Half Moon takes guests through a mental tour of Jamaica using professionally mixed music and top-notch instructors who serve as “tour guides” during the ride. After researching the Jamaican countryside and collecting some of the best reggae and tribal music on the planet, I designed three unique tours to inspire and energize guests.
The Climb to Blue Mountain is a challenging ride, which transports students to Jamaica’s world famous coffee plantations atop the 7,402-foot Blue Mountain peak. Riders leave the gates of Half Moon on this epic climb and return 45 minutes later, euphoric and ready for a cool splash in the Caribbean.
The No Problem Tour is an interval-based class where riders navigate the streets of Montego Bay, passing straw markets and taking a loop around the famous haunted mansion in Rose Hall. Riders experience bumpy roads and rolling hills on this fun-filled journey.
Adventures in Negril takes guests to Negril’s most beautiful seven-mile beach, cruising through busy streets and into the countryside and friendly jungles. The ride ends when guests reach the summit overlooking the beach and spin down to the turquoise sea below where an iced-cold Red Stripe is waiting!
Half Moon’s Spinning studio opened March 2010, and guests are raving about this new fitness amenity. Scott Schlesinger, Master Instructor from Miami, certified Half Moon’s instructors so you can be sure their training is exceptional. While other luxury resorts are cutting back on guest services and facility improvements, Half Moon has opted to invest even more in its fitness amenities. Celebrated Living, the magazine for American Airline’s premium class passengers, named Half Moon among the Top 10 Caribbean Resorts, specifically recognizing its new Spinning studio and teen center.
