Often when I teach in clubs or at events I ask the participants why they work out. What is your goal?
Most of the time only few people answer. As the majority does not exactly know why they are coming to their Spinning® class, they just come because it is healthy and fun. Of course these can be goals as well, but wouldn’t it be nice to have a specific reason why you are working out?
Once you start thinking about this you might find that you are actually wanting to work towards something specific. In one of my classes for example I have a nice lady who wants to get in shape for her marriage. Another student is training for muscular endurance and another participant is working on mental strength.
For me personally I want to have one big physical challenge every year. That is my one big goal. In 2013 I participated in the Mud Masters Obstacle Run. For 2014 I have set a new goal. Participate in a big event called Alpe d’HuZes. It is a big charity event to support the cancer foundation in the Netherlands. On the 5th of June all participants will get the chance to climb the Alpe d’Huez up to 6 times by foot (running) or by bike. Although I do have a nice aerobic base and I am training regularly I still need to make a training plan so I will be able to reach my goal of 3 climbs that day.
If you want to make sure you will reach your goals, make sure you share them with your Spinning® instructor. As he/ she is more than just an instructor, he can and will be your COACH. I am convinced that he/ she will be more than happy to guide you into a training plan, providing you with information about your training heart rates, training frequency and intensity. This is what we call periodisation.
Of course it might be possible after reading this blog that you discover that you actually really did not have a goal until today. No worries, just follow my lead and pick a nice physical challenge for yourself. It reminds you that you are alive and makes you feel grateful that you can do what you want!
Just let me know when you need my help, I will be happy to guide you!
