Most people consider junk food chips, sweets and fast food. But low and behold, junk food is any food that has a devastating effect on your blood sugars too. In a previous post, I suggested that you consider banning high glycemic carbs from your daily diet. That is no bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, sweets, cereals or juice. Is this girl nuts, you ask? No! But I work in age management during the day and I get to see lots and lots of labs. High GI carbs make you old, they make you fat, and they even make you sluggish.
Who in the world wants to walk into a high energy Spin(R) class and feel sluggish? Who in the world wants to look and feel 10 years older than they are? Certainly not me, especially if I know that we will be pushing our anaerobic threshold the whole class. So, the best thing to do is this; According to tool #73 in Breaking the Chains of Obesity, 107 Tools, you should Stock your Kitchen with Foods you Don't Crave.
I went to my client's house tonight and learned that all he had eaten were 2 hard boiled eggs, toast, and a corn on the cob. Here is a 5/10 man at 262 lbs who was ready to dive into a pasta dish at 9pm when I left after his session. This man is a recovering cancer patient, morbidly obese and is suffering from metabolic syndrome. His entire pantry contains bread, pasta, different bags of rice, lots of beans (which 1/2 cup isn't bad, but more is calorically dense) and fatty cut meats. It's only a matter of time before this man leaves this land.
Here are some alternatives I left him with:
- Instead of bread in the AM with his eggs, he will eat fruit
- Instead of rice, he will eat 1/2 cup of beans with lots of assorted veggies and a protein
- Instead of pasta, he will eat spaghetti squash with lean bison meat and marinara sauce
- Instead of bologna, he will eat 2 slices of prosciutto and find a nitrate free lean cold cut pending for "JZ" approval (that's me by the way! LOL).
So, how does this pertain to you? Healthy aging begins now. Just as the financial planners say to start saving for retirement now so that you have money later on in life, I say to start observing and respecting your health today so that you can age gracefully for later and have your health.
