Give Yourself a Mid-Workout Break

According to the findings of a recent study done in Japan, breaking up a workout with a rest period may burn more fat than a single extended workout. The researchers found that the men in their study who rested in the middle of their workout showed a greater amount of lipolysis, the breakdown of fat, than the men who worked out continuously for the same total amount of time. The full results of the study can be found in the June 2007 edition of the Journal of Applied Physiology, published by the American Physiological Society. Because the study was conducted with only healthy, physically active men averaging the age of 25 using indoor cycling machines, the researchers plan to follow up with more studies using a variety of workouts and types of individuals.
